AOL Time Warner Inc. sued Microsoft Corp. yesterday in what could be the first of several corporate legal actions against the Redmond software maker.

The media company's novel lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., claims Microsoft's "series of anti-competitive and exclusionary acts" in the 1990s caused AOL's Netscape Navigator Internet browser to rapidly lose market share.

In the 19-page filing, AOL Time Warner seeks three times the damages it allegedly suffered and asks the court to restore competition in the market for Web browsers. Federal law allows triple damages to be awarded in ...
