January is Cervical Cancer Health Awareness Month, notes Bea McLain, Public Health Nurse of the Madison County Health Department.
McLain points out that that cervical cancer is a disease which develops slowly and attacks the tissues of the cervix. The cervix is the opening of the uterus, the hollow, pear shaped organ where a baby develops. Before cancer cells are found on the cervix, the tissues of the cervix go through changes in which abnormal cells begin to appear. If not detected at a pre-cancerous stage, abnormal cells may become cancerous and start to grow and spread.
