MILD WEATHER BOOSTS JANUARY ECONOMY IN WASHINGTON STATE

OLYMPIA, Wash., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Washington's unemployment rate increased by three-tenths of a percentage point in January to 6.4 percent of the labor force, according to Employment Security Commissioner Isiah Turner.

"Normally, the winter months mark the high point for the year in terms of overall joblessness because of seasonal cutbacks in major industries," Turner said, "but mild weather held employment up and kept the rate from rising a typical full percentage point over the month."
