The removal of restriction on press publishing license (SIUP) in 1998 has resulted in increase in printing ink requirement in the country. Ink imports, therefore, have increased - doubling from 1,789 tons to 3,599 tons valued at US$ 13.6 million that year. In 1999, imports dropped to 2,005 tons valued at US$ 7.97 million following the soaring prices of newsprint. In 2000, imports rose again to 2,836 tons valued at US$ 13.69 million Printing ink accounted for 88% or 2,495 tons of the imports in 2000 as shown in the following table.
