IN THE LAST twenty years, Rashid al-Daif (b. 1945) has published ten novels, some of which have been translated into other languages. His novel Azizi al-Sayyid Kawabata (2995) was rendered into eight European languages, and his Fusha Mustahdafa bayn an-Nu'as wa al-Nawm (2986) was made into a French movie in Switzerland. A Lebanese from a Maronite family, he teaches Arabic language and literature at the Lebanese University in Beirut and also writes poetry.
