Sometimes we get the fish and sometimes the fish get us. The struggle to survive and the instinct for self-preservation are shared between fish and fishermen and our common fates are intertwined more than we know.
The salmon spilled over the rail of the F/V Shawnee and the fish thrashed in the salt water, frothing through the scuppers. One last gasp, one last scent of a river sent the salmon roiling into of frenzy of hope.
A young crewman waded into the mass of fish and they only thrashed the more. A dog salmon whirled beneath the boot of the impatient crewman. He kicked it two or three times, attempting to stomp the life and hope from the big fish.
