Article: The Kovels: Books spawn newspaper column, which spawns newsletter, which spawns television show, which spawns newspaper column. (Publisher profile).

Sometimes would-be publishing entrepreneurs identify newsletters as an opportunity and then cast about for a subject to publish on. But more frequently the beginning publisher is already an authority or expert in the new newsletter's subject area.

When Ralph and Terry Kovel launched their newsletter, Kovels on Antiques, in the mid-1970s, they had already been well known in the antique field for at least a decade.

The Ohio-based couple had published several books in the field, which led to an invitation to do a Q & A column in the Cleveland Press and eventually as part of the Register & Tribune syndicate (and even a series on public TV back in the '60s).
