When people first think about visual art, they expect to see something pleasing that does not include any risky ideas. They often believe that pictures should only show handsome men and beautiful women, flowers that are perfectly formed and landscapes that are majestic or serene.
Only when they learn more about art do they come to realize that artistic expression spans the widest possible range of human feelings and that not all of these feelings are pretty. Grotesque art, in particular, is never pretty.
