During July, I had the distinct honor of leading the U.S. delegation at HFMA's U.S/U.K. Exchange in Oxford, England. I had been to the Exchange once before when the United States played host, but it wasn't until I visited the United Kingdom for this year's Exchange that the stark contrast between the two country's healthcare systems really struck me.
The United Kingdom's healthcare system is under central government control through the National Health Service (NHS). Approximately 90 percent of the expenditures for health care in the United Kingdom are funded through the NHS, with private insurance beginning to penetrate the market.
