Founded during the darkest days of World War II, the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra is currently touring the region and celebrating the 60th anniversary of its inaugural concert.
Though the orchestra came into being as a group formed to accompany an open-air performance of Handel's Messiah in the south Birmingham suburb of Billesley in November, 1941, its first appearance as a symphonic ensemble in its own right came a few months later.
