E. Hunter Harrison, Canadian National executive vice president and chief operating officer, is arguably the best operating officer in the railroad business today. He has set a benchmark for the industry with CN's highly successful scheduled railroad, a concept he brought with him from the Illinois Central when CN acquired it in 1998. Other carriers are following CN's example by implementing some form of scheduled operations of their own, and Harrison's proven methods have helped give the combined CN/IC the lowest operating ratio among all North American Class I's: 67 at last count. For these reasons, Harrison is Railway Age's 2002 Railroader of The Year.
