THE champion of British invention and manufacturing, James Dyson, is to shift production of his vacuum cleaners to the Far East to save money.
The move, which will cost 800 jobs, drew accusations of betrayal from union leaders and surprise from trade ministers, who claim to have been kept in the dark.
It will be seen as another nail in the coffin of Britain's reputation as 'the workshop of the world'.
Mr Dyson has previously threatened to shift production overseas, blaming Britain's refusal to join the euro and difficulty in getting planning permission to expand his operations.
