MINNEAPOLIS and ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Ninety-five years of transit history will fall to the ground in coming months, following a ceremony this afternoon to begin demolition of Metro Transit's Snelling Garage.
Residents of the Midway neighborhood, nearby business owners and public officials gathered to symbolically swing a sledgehammer at the former streetcar manufacturing shop. Actual demolition is scheduled to begin next week. The building has been vacant since September, when Metro Transit moved bus operations to its new East Metro Transit Facility on St. Paul's East Side.
