Article: European Central Bank chief to leave.

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Feb 07, 2002

In a surprise statement Thursday, Wim Duisenberg, president of the European Central Bank, said he would resign his post in July 2003.

The European Commission, the European Union executive group that oversees the bank, expressed satisfaction with the decision. Duisenberg, 63, "is a man who respects his personal commitments," the commission said in a statement.

The former Dutch central bank manager in 1998 agreed he would resign his eight-year term after four years as part of a political compromise with France. But in recent months, Duisenberg has said he made no absolute commitment to step down.
