Teaching art is much more than vocabulary, process, technique, or the elements and principles of design, even when you teach from a cart. Sometimes it is the possibility to transcend place and culture--to become immersed in another's thoughts, rituals, and historical tales. My fifth graders embarked on such a journey. We traveled to Africa via posters and Duncan Clarke's book African Art to learn and dispel stereotypes. We concentrated on the masquerade phenomena in Africa. Masks are used throughout Africa, in almost all the cultures.
Materials
