After 18 months without a permanent leader, Mount Sinai Medical Center last week named a Florida physician and scientist to be its new chief executive.
Dr. Kenneth Berns, 63, currently vice president for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine of the University of Florida in Gainesville, will become CEO of Mount Sinai on April 1.
He faces a number of difficult tasks, including fixing Mount Sinai's shaky finances and managing its increasingly distant relationship with its merger partner, NYU Medical Center.
