Naturalist and writer Peter Matthiessen has written eloquently about all manner of the world's wild citizens, from tigers to tiny shore birds.
Now, however, he has turned his attention to a creature dear to Wisconsin's heart -- the crane.
From a quote by Aldo Leopold at the beginning to a description of sandhill cranes flying above the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge on the last page, Matthiessen's "The Birds of Heaven; Travels with Cranes" is a poetic celebration of a bird whose ancient croak of a call completes a Wisconsin marsh as surely as black spots complete a Holstein.
