TALLAHASSEE, Fla. _ The Florida Legislature has bills in both chambers that would require public libraries to install filtering software on their computers to keep children from accessing obscene materials.
But some groups don't think the state should get involved. Both the Florida Library Association and the American Civil Liberties Union are fighting to keep the decision about whether to use filters at the county level.
"I appreciate that filters are a very emotional issue," said Jody Fitzgerald, lobbyist for the library association. "The issue is normally handled in the state at the local level. And that's dependent upon the needs of the community."
