MAZAMA -- Five hours in the car and your spouse and kids are ready to commit an act of aggression.
"Hang on," you plead. "We're almost there."
This is the long way to Mazama, nestled into the eastern flank of the Cascade Range. But it's wintertime and the North Cascades Highway connecting to Western Washington has been closed by snow for months.
So the only way to reach this tiny town from the Seattle area by car is along the southern route of the Cascade Loop (Interstate 90 or state Route 2, west to state Route 97, then north to state Route 20 west).
