Article: World Heritage at the crossroads: although Australia currently holds the Chair of the World Heritage Bureau, our reputation as responsible custodians of World Heritage sites in this country is being frittered away.

IN 1972 THE WORLD Heritage Convention was adopted by the UNESCO General Conference. With 164 signatories, it has proven to be the most successful international legal instrument for the protection of cultural and natural heritage.

Australia is fortunate to have 14 areas listed for their natural and/or cultural value. These are treasures not only for all Australians, but for all peoples of the world. We must ensure our World Heritage sites are properly identified and protected. Much more needs to be done in Australia to ensure that this takes place.
