ROCKVILLE, MD. -- A new animal drug application (NADA) for Ventipulmin Syrup, which contains a small amount of clenbuterol, was approved in 1998 as a restricted-use, prescription-only drug for treating horses affected with airway obstruction, according the Food & Drug Administration.

When this approval was granted, FDA said several controls were put in place to ensure the drug would not be misused in food-producing animals.

In a notice issued Jan. 10, FDA emphasized that Ventipulmin is the only clenbuterol drug product approved for use in the U.S. and may only be used in horses not intended for food.
