NEW YORK -- U.S. mill consumption of wool for apparel increased in September over the amount used in September 1988, according to the Bureau of the Census.

For the 1989 month, wool use was 12,246,000 pounds compared with 11,248,000 pounds for the 1988 month. Consumption on both the woolen and worsted systems of manufacture increased.

Almost double the amount of wool was consumed on the worsted system than was used in woolen manufacture. The worsted weavers and spinners used 6,986,000 pounds, against 6,524,000 in September 1988, while the woolen mills used 3,247,000 pounds, up from 3,024,000 a year earlier.
