WINTON -- WINTON - The first thing you notice as you drive into town is that the road you're on, North Main Street, resembles a six-lane highway.
It is taking you into a town with a population of fewer than 1,000, but with more history than many larger areas with more residents.
The first inhabitants of this Hertford County community, which sits on a high bluff overlooking the Chowan River, were members of the Chowanoke, Tuscarora and Meherrin tribes, whose artifacts are still being found.
