In the heyday of houseplants, ferns dangled from knotted hangers, spider plants sprung from pots on shelves and ivies crept along windowsills.
But the '70s are over, and houseplants have moved on from their days as macrame menageries to a new, subdued role of bringing a sense of well-being to the home.
Instead of being crammed into every corner, houseplants are now used as accents, said Darlene Montgomery, who teaches a class on houseplant care at Shasta College in Redding, Calif. One plant or a carefully selected cluster provides a calming feel to decor.
