Often called the transitional phase between second and third generation (2G and 3G) wireless service, 2.5G first gained attention because of its ability to offer improved data capacity over 2G and deliver many of the same benefits as 3G.
As national carriers begin rolling out general packet radio service (GPRS)-the most common form of 2.5G being implemented today-changes in the telecom sector seem to indicate that this transitional technology may not hand off to 3G as soon as originally planned.
