Mercedes Matter, artist, author, founder and dean emeritus of the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, died in Manhattan on Dec. 4, age 87. The school, now nearly 40 years old, does not grant degrees and has an unusual free-form curriculum emphasizing uninterrupted work in studio environments and the study of life models and complex old-master compositions.
Matter was a lively proponent of painting directly from nature. The vigorous, angular marks of her high-keyed oil paintings and charcoal drawings capture the geometries and rhythms of her motifs rather than descriptive details. Developing from intricate still-life setups, the works tend ...
