Within five years, the volume of crude oil flowing from Alberta's oil sands is expected to surpass the current 1 million barrel per day output of Alaska's North Slope. By the end of the decade, 2 million b/d could be flowing from this increasingly popular Canadian heavy oil play.
Because of the large amount of gas consumed in the process of producing this oil, a growing number of analysts question whether much, if any, northern gas from the Mackenzie Valley will ever find its way to consumers -- despite persistent talk of a big new gas pipeline out of the region to the US.
