IF THE child is truly father to the man, the Archbishop-elect of Glasgow's fate was sealed even before he was born. Mario Joseph Conti, great-grandson of Italian farmers, grandson of successful economic migrants and son of devout Catholic parents, was taken on his first trip to Rome while still in the womb.
He has a suspicion that his mother made a pact with God that if her much longed-for child was a boy, she would dedicate his life to the Church.
