The European Commission's Director General for Health and Consumer Protection, Robert J. Coleman, explained the European Union's position in a recent speech. Coleman, emphasized the EU's determination to explain and promote the precautionary principle in international venues, such as the Codex Alimentarius and the WTO. The Commission believes that establishing guidelines for the use of the precautionary principle will reduce the concerns that the principle might be used as tool for protectionism.
