A downtown convention center has slipped far down the to-do list of Cleveland's political leaders, eclipsed by more pressing economic development matters and by a plan to reshape the lakefront and the highways that run through the city.
Typical is the view of new Cleveland City Council President Frank Jackson, who said construction of a convention center should take a back seat to immediate concerns created by the ailing economy. Those worries include declining sales tax revenue, a $56.8 million deficit in Cleveland's budget, and about 3,200 workers left unemployed by the closing of steelmaker LTV Corp.
