Sinn Fein, the Provisional IRA's political representatives, now one of the wealthiest political parties in Europe, is making a major drive for gains in the Irish Republic's general elections expected later this year or next.
Irish political analysts believe the party, already a key part of the power-sharing, cross-community coalition in Northern Ireland, could win enough seats to also join a coalition government in the Irish Republic too. Then it would be well on the way to becoming the dominant and ultimately governing political party in both parts of Ireland.
