After a year of planning, the Oklahoma City Public Schools won approval from the voters in Nov 2001 for a pair of tax increases to finance MAPS (Metropolitan Area Public Schools) for Kids, a $700 million, multi-year school rebuilding and improvement plan. More than $50 million will be spent on technology over the next four years.
The victory is especially sweet, coming as it did after the defeat of two previous bond proposals in 1999 and 2000, when voters refused to finance new buses, computers and school repairs.
