PARANASAL SINUSES
THE SINUSES-air-filled cavities in the bones surrounding the nose-are divided in 4 pairs: frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid, and maxillary. Like other parts of the nasal passages, they are lined with sticky mucus, and a bacterial infection that causes an inflammation of this lining is called sinusitis. The infection may partially or totally obstruct the flow of air and mucus into the nose, and may be accompanied by pus.
