EXTENDED-CARE FACILITIES
EXTENDED-CARE FACILITIES are a relatively recent innovation, providing care that is intermediate between that given in an acute-care hospital and that provided in a skilled nursing facility (nursing home). These facilities provide short-term, comprehensive inpatient care, usually following hospitalization, for patients who no longer need the full range of hospital services but still require continuous professional nursing and medical supervision. They may also serve people who are not acutely ill, but who have medical conditions that require skilled care. Many extended-care facilities were established to free acute-care beds.
