II. Introduction
The extraordinary faunas and floras of oceanic islands--that is, islands located over oceanic plates that have never been connected to continental land masses (Nunn, 1994)--with unique assemblages of species and high levels of endemism have historically been of interest to naturalists (e.g., Sloane, 1707-1725; Shelvocke, 1726; Linnaeus, 1747; Juan & Ulloa, 1813; Hooker, 1853).
