CADMIUM ANTIMONIDE. CdSb. Mol. wt. 234.2; m.p. 452[degrees]C. Crystallizes in the rhombic system with a = 6.26 angstroms, b = 7.98 angstroms, c = 9.55 angstroms. Hard, brittle, metallic gray material prepared by mining stoichiometric proportions of the pure constituents and heating in a sealed glass container under a low pressure of hydrogen, Cooling has to be slow, and further annealing is necessary, otherwise the product is very brittle and easily fragments into small pieces. The intermetallic compound expands on freezing. Precautions must be taken to avoid fracturing the glass tube in which it is prepared.
