SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO - For construction materials, they used anything that was at hand: mud, grasses, rough timbers, found lumber, twigs. For fencing around their yards, they would plant prickly pear cactus, then let it grow so tall and thick that a chicken (or a toddler) couldn't possibly execute an escape through it.
