The shyness of Colombia
WITH ex-GENERAL Manuel Noriega safely a prisoner of the war against drugs, it seemed a good idea in Washington to move the front line southwards from Panama. The next place down on the map of Latine America is Colombia. To the open seas off that country's Caribbean coast, the United States navy let it be known it was dispatching the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy, with the necessary escort and supply vessels. This flotilla was more than a mere anti-smuggling patrol, and it startled the man whose fight against the drugs traders the United States most wants to help--Mr Virgilio Barco, the president of Colombia.
