Carrots for Ceauses . . . Oops, We Mean Deng
THE late Nicolae Ceausescu attempted to put down a democratic rebellion through slaughter, and even ten thousand dead bodies did not save him. His army turned against his Securitate political police. Ceausescu and his wife Elena went before a firing squad, and Securitate officers are now on trial.
Had Ceausescu succeeded, placing his democratic opposition before firing squads, giving others thirty-year sentences, and then, after what they call "a decent interval," lifted martial law, would the Bush Administration today be hailing this last as "a positive step" justifying "normal" relations with the Ceausescu ...
