Eugene officials halted work Tuesday morning on a proposed 35-unit housing tract north of Eugene to determine whether the developer violated county tree preservation standards by clearing a majority of the trees on the 9 1/2 -acre site last week.
The city's action defused a demonstration at the site, where a protester abandoned a suspended platform she had occupied for two days and nights to block heavy equipment from returning.
City land use management supervisor Mike McKerrow said officials are examining the work and studying the county code standards to determine what to do next.
