Bee Stings
About 1 million Americans are severely allergic to the venom of bees, hornets, yellow jackets, and fire ants. Although death from anaphylactic shock following a sting is relatively rare, it is the most common cause of death from animal, snake, or insect bites in this country. People who are hypersensitive to bee venom should be extremely careful when going outdoors in areas or at times of the year when there may be bees. Proper protection includes wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts, shoes, and socks of subdued colors and patterns. Do not wear perfumes or colognes.
