The Hubble Space Telescope is named after American astronomer Edwin P. Hubble (1889-1953). During its minimum 15-year life it will provide astronomers with unprecedented views of the universe in the ultraviolet, visible and near infra-red parts of the spectrum. Through ESA's contribution to the program, astronomers from ESA member states will obtain 15 percent of the total observation time.
