FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- Eight members of an elite Army special operations aviation unit and two Air Force airmen were presumed dead Friday after their helicopter crashed into the sea during counterterrorism exercises with Philippine troops.
The MH-47E Chinook helicopter appeared to be burning when it went down, witnesses said, but U.S. and Philippine officials say it was not hit by rebel fire.
The eight Army crew members were ''Night Stalkers'' from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, based at Fort Campbell. The regiment's 1,500 members are trained to slip special forces commandos behind enemy lines aboard ...
