Proof that when it comes to design, bigger is not always better exists at the new Captain D's prototype in Rainbow City, Ala.
Tucked into the endcap of a strip mall is a 1,784-square-foot Captain D's, less than half the size of a traditional unit. Even with a limited menu and only 33 seats, the store is on track to gross $800,000 this year, just a shade less than the $886,000 that the larger units average.
"We're very happy with it," says Ron Walker, president and COO of the Nashville, Tenn.-based, 560-unit chain. "Customers are telling us they like the nice fresh look, the seating and the menu board."
