Some 50 years ago, Adlai Stevenson seemed to be peering into our future as well as commenting on his own time. "What do we mean by patriotism in the context of our times? I venture to suggest that what we mean is a sense of national responsibility . . . a patriotism which is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime."
The America of 2002 is now coming down from one of those "frenzied outbursts of emotion," the national reaction to the horror of Sept. 11 and the resulting war against terrorism. Although the war continues and the United States could be attacked ...
