The Minnesota Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, which works to bolster civil rights and economic justice, has drafted a six-point statement intended to question what it calls the Bush administration's "contra-constitutional programs" in the light of the terrorist actions of Sept. 11.
The statement calls for the repeal of the USA Patriot Act, which includes expanded search and surveillance capabilities for law enforcement. It seeks to stop secret trials of suspected terrorists by military tribunals and the recent Justice Department ruling that allows eavesdropping on conversations between lawyers and clients suspected of terrorism.
