Q: When our interview panel rates a job candidate, they assign scores in several categories. Is it appropriate to list "appearance" as one of the categories on our rating form?
A: It's certainly legal to rate candidates on their appearance and demeanor at the job interview, but hiring records should be specific to avoid any perception that your interview panel is making decisions based on applicants' age, race, sex, religion, disability, or any other protected classification.
