DRUGS and alcohol are the twin blights of our society in Britain today, according to two reports published yesterday.

Between them they clog up the National Health Service and cause the deaths of more than 50,000 people every year. And the authorities seem powerless to do anything about it. They swell the number of crimes committed, and make our streets unsafe.

Even junior doctors, who would be more aware of the perils of over-indulging in alcohol, are themselves taking more than the recommended number of units of alcohol per week.
