2002 MAR 8 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Results from a statewide screening program show that more than 100 infants have been diagnosed with potentially fatal metabolic disorders in the past 5 years.
North Carolina started screening all newborns for metabolic disorders in 1997. A private company ran the tests for the pilot program at first, but the State Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh took over in 1999.
Using technology developed by researchers at Duke University, the screening process can detect as many as 30 metabolic disorders - genetic defects that impair the way foods are digested and absorbed. Without diagnosis, the disorders can result ...
