GILBERT, Ariz. -- A Spectrum Astro-built Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver is providing precise on-orbit determination for the joint NASA/French Space Agency Jason-1 satellite. Jason-1, launched in December 2001, is monitoring world climate interactions between the sea and the atmosphere, improving climate predictions. Working properly on first startup, the BlackJack GPS receiver produced data observables required for precise orbit determination and continues to operate nominally.
